The Military Ally Awareness Program, developed by the Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center at San Diego State University and presented in partnership with the University of San Diego, provides insight into and awareness of the unique cultural and social background of the military community. The program is based on the “safe zone” concept and generates a network of partners which today’s military community can easily identify as understanding their situation. The program provides college campuses, community organizations, civic agencies, public and private industry, and other groups with the tools to understand , empathize with proctor the success of this large and diverse population. Consisting of a three hour seminar, Military Ally presentations offer discussions about the military culture, presents relevant data and demographic models, and interactive discussions to fully engage all learning styles. Participants walk away with a better understanding of the challenges the military population may encounter as well as the benefits of having this group on our campuses and in our communities. Those who complete the seminar and become a part of the Military Ally network receive a placard to place in their workspace and a lapel pin to wear as visible indicators of their network membership. Participation in the Military Ally program is open to campus faculty, staff, administrators, and student groups and partners including off-campus community organizations, civic agencies, active and reserve military components, and business leadership. Participation is especially welcome to other colleges and universities in the region, throughout the state, and across the country as it is recognized that many military and veteran students transfer between institutions and the easily recognizable Military Ally symbolism will help ease the often confusing integration into a new academic environment. Attendance is not exclusive to those with limited or no military connection. Rather, we encourage participation regardless of service connection and our attendees have consisted of veterans, active and reserve service members, military retirees, and family members.

Don’t Reinvent the Wheel: Sharing best practices for career and job development. Ever feel like you’re constantly spinning your wheels assisting students in transitioning into employment? This session will allow attendees to share promising practices, strategies, and solutions to increase successful employment outcomes. Using a world café model, attendees will rotate through tables to discuss various topics related to career and job development, including connecting with employers, developing soft skills and grit, career assessments and exploration, curriculum, student expectations, and more!

Learning Disabilities: Strategies to Improve Math Skills – Paul Nolting – 9:00 – 5:00 – $90.00 – Salon A & B

Applying Study Skills, Instruction, Tutoring, Growth Mind Set, Accommodations and Course Substitutions Students are still having difficulty being successful in mathematics and some only need math courses to graduate. This workshop focuses on mathematics success through researching the variables that affect math learning, instruction, tutoring , determining the math learning affects of different disabilities, applying new accommodations, math study skills, mindfulness, course substitutions and working as a team for math success. Participants will learn to apply these strategies and develop student and college wide math success plans. Participants can also bring their own case studies for review.

Learning Ramps: An introduction to Universal Design for Learning This dynamic workshop is an introduction to Universal Design for learning. Topics discussed will include biological underpinnings of learning styles, dyslexia, and how multiple modes of learning can be used to make the curriculum more accessible to all learners. When the needs of students with disabilities are addressed in the classroom, all students benefit and good teaching happens!

Intellectual Disability/Autism Spectrum – Jane Thierfield-Brown – 12:00 – 5:00 – $80.00 – San Ramon

Autism, Neurodiversity and the College Campus ~ College campuses continue to increase their knowledge of and their numbers of students with autism. The newest CDC numbers estimate 1 in 59 children being diagnosed with autism. Approximately one half of people diagnosed could be college capable. Many students will have few if any issues on campus, however, accommodations may be unique for this population and Disability Services professionals need to be informed and thoughtful. This session will introduce latest information, research and model practices and programs. Classroom accommodations, sensory complexities and social issues will be discussed.
