2016 CAPED Scholarship Descriptions

The following CAPED Scholarships are open for application in the 2016 cycle. You may apply for a maximum of 3 scholarships. However, selected applicants will only receive 1 scholarship award.

Access Technology Scholarship up to $1,000

This scholarship is recognized in memory of Penny Petersen, who was an Assistive Technology Specialist from CSU Long Beach. Penny promoted and advocated for the technology needs of students with disabilities. Assistive technology software or hardware (up to $1000) will be awarded to one or more college/university students, who use this technology to access college courses.

ELIGIBILITY ALERT: General Eligibility Requirements apply. Applicants must already use the technology described in their supplemental essay. More than one awardee may be selected for this award. This scholarship award is in the form of technology (hardware/software); computers/laptops will not be considered for award. There is no cash award.

Alyssa McCroskey Memorial Scholarship $1,000

This scholarship is recognized in memory of Alyssa “Aly” Rayne McCroskey, who is the granddaughter of Paula McCroskey. Aly lost her life to suicide in 2008; she was 16 years old. Paula McCroskey has been Coordinator of Disability Support Programs & Services in the Riverside Community College District for over 25 years. This scholarship is awarded to a college/university student with a disability, who is making a positive difference in the lives of other students who are struggling to maintain or regain their mental health.

ELIGIBILITY ALERT: General Eligibility Requirements apply.

Betty Bacon Memorial Scholarship $1,000

This scholarship is recognized in memory of Betty Bacon, who, for over 25 years, was a Director of Disabled Student Services at San Diego State University. She was a consummate advocate for people with disabilities. This scholarship is awarded to a 4-year college/university student with a disability.

ELIGIBILITY ALERT: General Eligibility Requirements apply. Applicants must be attending a 4-year college/university in Fall 2016 in order to apply.

CAPED Excellence Scholarship $1,500

This scholarship is recognized in celebration of student excellence. This scholarship is awarded to a college/university student with a disability, who demonstrates high academic achievement and who is involved in his/her community and campus life.

ELIGIBILITY ALERT: General Eligibility Requirements apply. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA in order to apply.

CAPED Memorial Scholarship $1,000

This scholarship honors outstanding professionals within the field of California postsecondary disability services. This scholarship is awarded to a college/university student with a disability.

ELIGIBILITY ALERT: General Eligibility Requirements apply. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in order to apply.

College Access & Success Scholarship $1000

This scholarship is in support of neurodiverse students building their career skills through attending college or university classes. This scholarship is awarded to students with intellectual disabilities or on the autism spectrum who are participating in postsecondary education in order to support their transition to employment.

ELIGIBILITY ALERT: General Eligibility Requirements apply. Applicants must have an intellectual disability or ASD, or be a client of the Regional Center.

Dick Griffiths Memorial Scholarship $1,000

This scholarship is recognized in memory of Richard (Dick) Griffiths, who was a CAPED founder and Learning Disabilities Specialist at Cabrillo College. This scholarship is awarded to a college/university student with a learning disability in math.

ELIGIBILITY ALERT: General Eligibility Requirements apply. Applicant’s Disability Certification Form must indicate a Learning Disability in Math.

Steve Fasteau Past Presidents’ Scholarship $1,500

This scholarship is in honor of all the dedicated professionals, who have served as President of CAPED. In honor of all the dedicated professionals, who have served as President of CAPED. This year’s award is in memory of Fran Neumann. Fran Neumann was the 3rd CAPED President, and she started one of the five original California community college programs for students with disabilities. She was the first CAPED president to attend the AHEAD Conference, and urged building a symbiotic relationship between the two organizations. She was a tireless advocate for students with disabilities not only in California, but across the nation. This scholarship is awarded to a college/university student with a disability, who has high academic achievement and has shown leadership and dedication to the advancement of students with disabilities in postsecondary (college/university) education.

ELIGIBILITY ALERT: General Eligibility Requirements apply. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA in order to apply. Applicants must indicate (in their supplemental essay) a history of leadership roles in a college/university setting.

Susan Bunch Memorial Scholarship $1,000

This scholarship is in memory of Susan Bunch, who was a Learning Disabilities Specialist from West Valley College. This scholarship is awarded to a college/university student with a learning disability, who is pursuing a college/university degree program.

ELIGIBILITY ALERT: General Eligibility Requirements apply. Applicant’s Disability Certification Form must indicate a Learning Disability.  Applicants must be pursuing a college/university degree (Associate, Bachelors, Masters, etc.) program. Applicants pursuing a certificate program will not be considered.
